Allies
Allies are the most important part of Forces of War. Without allies, you will not be able to compete at any level.
If you do not add allies, you will be outnumbered almost every time you enter battle. Even at level 1, if you enter a battle and you have not added any allies to your squad, you can be outnumbered 14 to 1. Your odds of winning battles will be very low.
My advice is to go to your squad page, and when your Ally Size is less than 200, go to the Forces of War forums and add codes until you reach 200. You may also use the Ally Codes page on this website.
To add codes, go to the Allies tab on the game page and insert the 5 letter code; the game will notify you if you are successful or not.
Many people post their codes on their walls via a sticky; you post a sticky on your wall by visiting your comments and making sure you check the Make Sticky box before you enter your comment.
There are a few numbers to keep in mind while you are adding allies or leveling.
200 - The Maximum amount of allies you can bring to battle at level 48+. Also the minimum amount of allies you should have at ANY level.
14 - The initial amount of allies you can bring to battle (at level 1).
4 - Add 4 allies for every level you gain (excluding level 1). At level 1 you can bring 14 Allies to battle in total.
300 - Total amount of allies you may bring to battle if you buy 100 Mercenaries (Learn about Mercenaries below)
Each ally can bring 100 weapons and 1 vehicle with them to battle. This is why allies are important.
You can go out and buy 200 vehicles when your at level 5, but only 1 can be used if you haven't added any allies.
If you did add 200 allies, at level 5 you can only use 30 of the allies. (Use a total of 30 vehicles)
An easy way to see how many allies you can equip weapons/vehicles with is to go to your armory page.
At the top of your armory page you will see "All of your 190 Squad members have a weapon," "Only 170 of your squad members have weapons, buy 20 more!" or similar. The numbers will vary depending on your level.

Mercenaries
Mercenaries can increase the total amount of allies you can bring to battle. Mercenaries are different from alliance members in that you must buy the mercenaries from the black market (25 Gold Bars each).
You may only use a maximum of 100 Mercenaries, which will increase your total alliance size by 100 allies.
This increases the maximum amount of allies you can bring to battle up to 300.
There is a maximum amount of mercenaries you can use at every level (at level 1, you may use 2 mercenaries), up to a maximum of 100.
You do not need to add more allies in order to use mercenaries.
